Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society, often called as the IEEE NPSS is a wing of IEEE that
focuses on the topics prevalent to the nuclear and plasma research and development. Nuclear
energy usage gives no emissions. This motivated the IEEE NPSS VIT chapter to celebrate
world’s Zero Emission Day (ZeDay) on 21st September, 2015.
Dr. Roshan Livingstone, Associate Professor, Dept. of Radiology, Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, was the featured speaker to give his lecture on ZeDay and radiations. Dr. Partha Sarathy Mallick, Dean, School of Electrical Engineering (SELECT) and Dr. R.Sudha, Faculty co-ordinator of IEEE NPSS VIT were also present for the event. Over 120 students from the VIT University attended the event held in between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM, in Kamraj Auditorium of the university.
Reason for celebrating ZeDay and it's importance were unveiled during the event. Journey of IEEE NPSS VIT and it's uniqueness were revealed. Board members for IEEE NPSS VIT were officially announced. Faculty coordinator, Dr.Sudha talked about saving energy and creating awareness on Zero Emission. Also welcomes the Chief guest, Dr.Livingstone, who talked on a wide-range of topics related to radiation. Current rate of fossil fuel consumption and it's future scenario were discussed.
Dr.Livingstone gave his informative lecture on Imaging in medicine, Problems with fossil fuels; Type-2 Diabetes, IAEA monitoring and Safety standards, CT scanners, CT imaging, Role of Physicist/Bio-medical Engineer, Digital Image Technology, X-rays, Early imaging modalities, Radiation safety and need for technology, Need of educating people on radiation issues. Various doubts asked by the audience were clarified. There was an attractive video presentation on ‘Nuclear Energy- Greener Energy’ which concluded with message; ‘Work Together For Better Future’. Event ended with grand vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, Dean, Faculty coordinator and all the members of IEEE-NPSS.
